FAQs

Do the needles hurt?
Patients are usually nervous their first time getting acupuncture, thinking that the needles will be painful just like getting a shot or a blood draw.  The needles I use are disposable and as thin as a human hair.  Many times patients have told me that they can barely feel the needles going in.  Acupuncture can release the body’s own natural painkillers, so many times patients enter a very relaxed state once the needles are in.  You may even take a nap on the table!

How does acupuncture work?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, the body is influenced by two opposing forces, yin and yang.  Yin represents the slow, internal and passive aspects of the body.  Yang is fast, external and active.  All disorders are based on imbalances of yin and yang as well as other factors such cold, heat, dampness, dryness, deficiency and excess.  The name for the life energy is ‘qi.’  Qi flows throughout the body in channels, each of which corresponds to the internal organs.  Acupuncturists use your symptoms, body type as well as tongue and pulse diagnosis to determine which type of imbalance may be causing your symptoms.  We then use acupuncture and herbal formulas to bring you back into balance.

Does acupuncture really work?
Chinese medicine is the oldest medicine in the world, dating back 2,000 years ago.  It has been proven through the ages.  The World Health Organization recommends acupuncture for over 50 different conditions, including digestive, gynecological, circulatory, respiratory and psychological problems.  In China, hospitals have integrated eastern and western medicine, providing the best of both worlds.  Imagine receiving and herbal formula through IV in the hospital to help you recover after surgery!

How long will I need acupuncture?
That will be determined after you have been evaluated.  Acupuncture needs to be performed regularly and the formulas should be taken according to instruction.  This will cut down on treatment time in the long run.  Once you have reached the desired results, you will be released from care with a plan to maintain your good health and prevent future problems.  In general, acute conditions clear up quickly and chronic conditions require more time.

Does insurance cover acupuncture?
Yes!  More and more insurance companies are covering acupuncture because it is inexpensive, safe and very effective.   We are happy to print your receipt with the appropriate insurance codes so that you can submit it to your carrier for reimbursements!

What are your hours?
Weekdays 9-3 and Monday nights at Bodhi Yoga 4:30-10 PM.  New patient appointments typically last 1.5 hours and continuing patient visits are 1 hour.  Please arrive on time so that I can see you for the complete treatment time.
